The Perfect Layering Guide

Layer yourselves and kiddos like the perfect dessert or 7-layer dip…or 4 layer in this instance.

  1. BASELAYER (typically wool or synthetic fiber like spandex)
  2. MID LAYER (typically fleece or thicker wool)
  3. EXTRA INSULATION if necessary (ex. Puffer down jacket)
  4. WATERPROOF shell (Jacket/Coat)

That’s it! Sweet and simple.

If you layer correctly, with the right material, you can have endless adventures outside. A system that allows for customizable ability to regulate your body temperature and protect against the elements may be mistaken for a super power.

Layers allow you to adjust to the level of physical activity you are completing along with navigating change in outside temps. Too hot? Remove a layer or too. Too cold? Add a layer or two. Starts to rain, add your waterproof shell. You’re almost a transformer.

Layering also allows you to fine tune your comfort while being outside in cold, wet conditions instead of putting your body through drastic temperature swings. We’ll touch on that below in our safety tips.

Here’s our NBW Perfect Layering Guide

(North American Continent, primarily Western United States for climate reference)

Safety Tips for layering and being outside in potentially dangerous weather:

  1. Don’t panic on packing too much. Pack as many layers as you think you and your family may need for an outing. We always over pack and sometimes it was absurdly overestimated, but there have been a few times where the weather reports weren’t exactly right or the windchill is colder than expected and we were incredibly grateful to have extra.
    • For an added dose of good measure, we also always pack down blankets in the car (we use Rumpl for it’s water resistant properties, awesome size, and rapid heating ability).
  2. Don’t be a hero. If you get too hot, shed a layer or two until your body temp normalizes. If you get too cold, ADD another layer. Don’t tough out either situation. The last thing you need while trying to enjoy yourselves outside is to have a person unexpectedly flirt with concerns for hypothermia or worse.
    • We are constantly checking on our kiddos to make sure they are maintaining a good temp. Not too sweaty, not too frost bitey. It’s ok to stop for 67 seconds to modify layers.

We truly hope this guide helps you as your prep for more outdoor adventures with family and friends. Once you have the system, it’s a well oiled machine. Especially once your kiddos understand the system.

Don’t cancel plans, layer up and make more!

Love,

We may own some of the products used in the guide. However, the products chosen for this guide were specifically off of technical breakdown/material of the the garment. There are LOTS of great options out there. Most of these were chosen because we are familiar with the brand or actually own the product and like it.
